Electrotrash is back online, celebrating South African electronic music

It’s been a while. Thirteen years, to be precise.

The last post on Electrotrash went up in 2013. Since then, the site has slowly fallen apart. Links have died, music has disappeared, and the old WordPress installation has become more trouble than it’s worth.

But the music, the artists and the stories are still worth keeping.

So we’ve brought Electrotrash back. Not as a new music blog, but as an archive of a particular time in South African electronic music.

A bit of history worth keeping

Electrotrash was always about the music coming out of South Africa. The producers, DJs, labels, parties and people making interesting things happen, often with very little attention from anywhere else.

Looking back through the old posts has been a reminder of just how much was going on. Some of those artists went on to bigger things. Others disappeared from view. Plenty of great music seems to have vanished from the internet altogether.

And that’s a shame.

The internet isn’t particularly good at remembering things. Websites close, file-hosting services disappear, SoundCloud accounts get deleted, and suddenly a track that was freely available fifteen years ago is nowhere to be found.

What’s changed?

We’ve moved the old site from WordPress to a much simpler static website. The original posts, images and other material have been carried across, and we’ve made an effort to preserve as much of the music as possible.

The idea is to keep things much as they were, rather than reinvent the site. There won’t be any grand redesign or attempt to make 2010 look like 2026.

It’s an archive, after all.

Help us fill in the gaps

There’s still some work to do.

A fair amount of the music originally featured on Electrotrash was hosted elsewhere. Over the years, some of those services have shut down, files have been removed, and links have stopped working.

We’ve recovered what we can, but there are gaps.

If you find something broken, please get in touch. A missing image, a dead download, a page that doesn’t load properly — we’d like to know.

More importantly, if you have copies of any of the missing music, or know where it can still be found, we’d love to hear from you.

Perhaps you’re an artist whose tracks we featured. Perhaps you’ve still got an old mix sitting on a hard drive. Or perhaps you know where one of those long-dead download links ended up.

Every little bit helps. We’d like to make the archive as complete as possible, while respecting the people who made the music. Please don’t upload or send copyrighted music unless you have the rights to share it; a lead or link is just as useful.

Each item below links back to the original post for context. Contact us if you can help locate anything.

Missing tracks and downloads

And that’s that.

No promises of regular posts or a big comeback. Just a small effort to keep a piece of South African electronic music history accessible.

If nothing else, it’s been good digging through the archives again.

Enjoy the trip down memory lane.
