Funny, beautiful, poetic, absurd – these are some of the words that come to mind when describing the music of Oy, the Swiss-Ghanaian artist aka Joy Frempong. A vocalist with the electronic outfit Filewile and a solo artist in her own right, Oy is in Southern Africa to perform material from her solo album “First Box Then Walk” (Creaked Records, 2010). Oy previously visited here in 2009 when Filewile toured its catchy mix of electro beats, dub effects, and versatile vocals. Her own work, however, is more playful, unpredictable, and colourful. If it were a screenplay, “First Box Then Walk” could easily be the next Michel Gondry film. The album is a Dadaist-inspired trip through childhood memories and a roller coaster odyssey through the outer limits of music. Recorded with little regard for the boundaries between genres, traces of soul, hip-hop, spoken word, improv, electronic, jazz, classical, and rock music can be heard throughout “First Box”. And yet even with so much going on in the music, Oy is capable of bringing it all to life on stage. Her performances are intense, blending naïve innocence with deep subject matter. And just like her inspiration, Nina Simone, Oy creates a listener’s world of intimacy and defiance.
